A LITTLE LESS TYPING.

Hold a key.
Speak.
Keep your words.

Dictation that fits where you write. Plainlet turns speech into plain text, with optional cleanup and control over where it’s processed.

THE WHOLE ROUTINE

One held key.
Back to your writing.

Leave Plainlet in the menu bar. When you have something to say, use your chosen modifier key.

  1. 01

    Hold and speak.

Hold Right Option to record, or choose another supported modifier in Settings. Release when you’re done.

  2. 02

    Make it your text.

Choose optional cleanup, add names to your vocabulary, and set exact replacement rules for words you use often.

  3. 03

    Keep writing.

The final text goes to your clipboard. Plainlet requests paste when the original field still passes its safety checks.

Changed apps or fields? Your result is still copied. Click the intended field and paste it yourself.

KNOW WHERE YOUR WORDS GO

Your choice
of processing.

The menu and recording display show the actual providers being used. Advanced settings can change the defaults below.

APPLE SPEECH + APPLE FOUNDATION MODELS

Stay on your Mac.

Default Local transcribes with Apple Speech and refines with Apple Foundation Models. Once the required assets are available, dictation processing runs on your Mac.

What you need
Speech assets; Apple Intelligence for cleanup

Model assets may need an initial download. If local cleanup is unavailable, Plainlet can deliver the corrected transcript with cleanup marked as skipped.

WORDS YOU CAN COME BACK TO

A small app.
Useful safeguards.

A

Recover either version.

Copy Last Result retrieves the final text. Copy Before Cleanup retrieves the transcript before model refinement, with your replacements already applied.

B

Questions stay questions.

Cleanup is designed to preserve what you dictated. If its output fails Plainlet’s fidelity checks, the corrected transcript is delivered with cleanup skipped.

C

Choose what stays.

No persistent transcript archive. Successful, cancelled, and no-speech recordings are deleted. Failed audio stays locally for bounded recovery.

BEFORE YOU TRY IT

A few things
to know.

Which Macs will Plainlet support?

Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 26 or later. Intel Macs and older macOS versions are unsupported. Local cleanup requires Apple Intelligence to be enabled and ready; Raw skips that cleanup step.

Will I need an OpenAI account?

Default Local and Raw use Apple providers and do not require an OpenAI account. Online uses your own OpenAI API key, with API usage billed separately by OpenAI. Advanced or imported settings may change the providers; check the actual destinations before recording.

Does it paste into every application?

Automatic paste depends on the destination’s Accessibility support and safety checks. Secure, changed, non-editable, or uncertain fields stay copy-only. A paste-requested message means the shortcut was sent; check that the text was inserted. Manual paste remains available from the clipboard.

Can I teach it names and specialist words?

Add known words in the native Settings window and create exact, whole-word replacement rules. Import and export your personalization between Macs. The optional Alfred Powerpack companion offers another way to maintain vocabulary.

What will it cost?

The planned launch price is $29 USD once, plus applicable taxes. One person can use it on up to two Macs. Released 1.x updates are included; future major upgrades may be sold separately. The launch offer includes a 14-day full-refund request window. Sales are not open yet.

When can I download it?

Plainlet is being prepared for public release. A date has not been announced. Download and purchase details will appear here when the release is ready.
